DRUG THRESHOLD

The Working Group on Controlled Substances has submitted three recommendations to the 2009 State Legislature including proposed changes to controlled substance thresholds including reductions in the marijuana thresholds and responsible increases in some of the cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin thresholds.

OFFICE OF THE HENNEPIN COUNTY ATTORNEY

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman serves as the chief prosecutor of all adult felony crimes and juvenile offenses in Hennepin County. The Office of the Hennepin County Attorney has as its core mission to serve justice and public safety through ethical prosecution.  County Attorney Freeman and his team of seasoned prosecutors are also responsible for providing legal counsel to the County Board of Commissioners and all County departments, as well as representing the County in civil lawsuits, child support matters, child protection actions and mental health commitments. The County Attorney's Office has nearly 400 employees and 160 prosecutors.

Southdale Shooting Suspect Goes to Court

A July 6, 2009 court hearing is scheduled for Edisson Daniel Lema of Richfield.  Lema, who is 17 years of age, has been ordered to stand trial as an adult in connection with the shooting in the parking lot of the Southdale  Mall last February.  Lema is charged with four counts of second degree intentional murder, two of those charges specify "for the benefit of a gang".  Lema's court hearing is July 6, 2009 at 930a.

Pen Standifer, accused of criminal sexual conduct, goes on trial July 6, 2009 at 9:00am in Hennepin County District Court.  Standifer, a former foster parent in Crystal is accused of sexually molesting two of his former foster children.  There are three counts of criminal sexual conduct against Standifer, with two of the accusations from allegations in the year 2005, and one charge stems from an allegation in December 2008.

A hearing is scheduled in Hennepin County District Court  for July 7, 2009 at 130pm for Martin Everett Opem (New Hope) charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct and one count of attempted criminal sexual conduct.  Everett is accused by his two daughters of sexual abuse.  

Sheryll Grace Friend is scheduled to appear in Hennepin County District Court July 7, 2009 on nine counts of theft by swindle, and nine counts of identity theft.  According to the criminal complaint, Friend was employed by Eden Prairie Dental Care between approximately 1994 through August  2008 as the Office Manager and is accused of stealing more than $100k between October 2002 and August 2008.  The hearing in criminal court begins at 9am.

ANNOUNCEMENT

The verdict is in, and sentencing is scheduled for late July.  A Hennepin County District Court jury after a day of deliberating  returned midafternoon on Friday with a verdict of guilt for Hassan Abdillahi.  Abdillahi will be sentenced July 21, 2009 at 130p in Hennepin County District Court (1556) for second degree intentional murder.  Abdillahi was found guilty of killing a man September 29, 2008 at the Somali Mall. 

Meantime, it's on to week number six in the court trial for Marlon Pratt.  The Defense began presenting its case Friday morning.  It is likely the trial could end by the second weekend of July.  Pratt is charged with seventeen counts of theft by swindle and one count of racketeering.  He is accused of accepting kickbacks in exchange for obtaining fraudulent mortgages for homebuyers. Prosecutors estimate the mortgage fraud exceeded $1.3 million.  Pratt is testifying in courtroom 1456
