The Hennepin County Attorney's Office prosecutes all adult felony crimes and juvenile offenses in Hennepin County. We handle appeals, white-collar crimes, community-focused prosecution, nuisance crimes and forfeiture cases. We're also responsible for providing legal counsel to the County Board of Commissioners and all County departments, as well as representing the County in civil lawsuits, child support matters, child protection actions and mental health commitments.
An internship is generally an experience that is not for school credit in which the intern gains on the job experience in an unpaid temporary position.
An externship is generally an experience for credit that is part of an education training program.
Students may gain valuable learning and experience from working as an intern or extern. With the knowledge of the increased demand for internship positions, this "Internship and Externship" process is intended to create a fair, open and competitive process for recruiting and appointing interns and externs to the County Attorney's Office.
Intern/Externs are hired as uncompensated trainees under the Fair Labor Standards Act. They are hired for a specific need or project that has been identified prior to interview process. Summer Intern/Externs are invited to participate in the "Summer Law Clerk Program" scheduled events such as: informational like the sheriff's crime lab, the jail, and viewing various court proceedings (drug court, property court, child support magistrate calendar, and court of appeals.) Lunch speakers include: attorneys on staff talking about areas of expertise, the medical examiner, judges, and the Hennepin County Attorney.
