Hennepin County Attorney's Office History

Amy Klobuchar

Hennepin County Attorney 1999-2006

Amy Klobuchar is the first woman to hold the office as Hennepin County Attorney.  Before leaving office for the United States Senate, Klobuchar focused on repeat offenders and subsequently launched an award winning community prosecution initiative that is modeled throughout the state.  Klobuchar has a long standing interest in protecting children, and as a U.S. Senator has aggressively attacked unsafe toys, such as lead based paint, that endangers lives.

Michael O. Freeman

Hennepin County Attorney

Michael Freeman has led the charge to reduce violence, especially youth and gang violence in Hennepin County.  In 2007, the start of his third term in office, Freeman announced the formation of the Gang Division.  Since that time, the Gang Division has prosecuted cases with a near 90-percent conviction rate, despite the challenge of  getting witnesses to testify and victims and/or their surviving family members to speak out.  Freeman has also been advocate against domestic violence, and opened the first Domestic Abuse Service Center in the county government center in the 90s. (1991-1999,  2007-present)
