Adult Prosecution

The Adult Prosecution Division charges all adult serious felony crimes against persons -- including murder, robbery, rape, assault, child abuse, domestic abuse, promoting prostitution, criminal vehicular homicide and convicted felons in possession of guns. Each prosecutor is responsible for all stages of prosecution and works closely with law enforcement, victim/witness advocates and others in the court system.

Child Abuse cases include sexual assaults in which the victim is under sixteen years of age; intra-familial sexual assaults without regard to age; malicious punishment; child neglect and endangerment cases; and certain designated physical assaults.

Domestic Abuse cases include any crime, whether against the person or their property, if the crime is motivated by a current or past intimate relationship between the parties. Crimes against third parties may also be included if such motive is evident.

Sexual Assault cases include sexual assaults in which the victim is sixteen years of age or older.

The Adult Prosecution Division is also in charge of all Grand Jury investigations. All cases carrying a penalty of life imprisonment must, by law, be presented to the grand jury. This unit also handles probation revocation hearings. The Violent Crimes Division also provides criminal justice training programs to law enforcement agencies and the entire HCAO.
