Drop Your Guns
In February 1992, Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman initiated a gun collection program targeted at youth. In seven days 6,136 guns were turned in at local fire stations. These guns were melted down and used to cremate this sculpture "Phoenix Rising" by Minneapolis artist Karen Sontag-Sattel and is displayed at the Hennepin County Government Center.

The Hennepin County Attorney serves as the chief prosecutor of all adult felony and juvenile crimes in Hennepin County. The County Attorney is legal counsel to the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners, its Administrator and all county departments.  The County Attorney represents the county in civil lawsuits, child support matters and child protection actions.

Hennepin County includes the City of Minneapolis and 45 other communities with a total population of more than one million residents.

SCOTT COUNTY JUDGE ORDERS SHERIFF'S DEPUTY TO COMMUNITY SERVICE

Joshua Williams stood and addressed the Scott County courtroom and the family of the man who was killed last summer, when Williams, while driving his squad car, struck and killed the man on Highway 3 in Empire Township.  Williams said,"I can not tell you how sorry I am for what happened". 

Williams was found guilty, earlier this year, of careless driving and sentenced Tuesday morning to 40 hours of community service and ordered to pay a fine of $380.  Williams' community serivce will include talking to new drivers and to law enforcement recruitment training classes. 

 BROOKLYN PARK MAN SENTENCED TO 45 YEARS IN PRISON

Jermaine Dickerson, of Brooklyn Park, who was found guilty of second degree intentional murder and of making terroristic threats is sentenced to 540 months in prison.  A Hennepin County District Court Judge sentenced Dickerson to 480 months for murder and 60 months for terroristic threats.  Both sentences were upward durational departures and were based on the particular cruelty, violation of the victim's zone of privacy and particular vulnerability of the victim.

It's your turn!   If you're enrolled in a high school in Hennepin County you are eligible to produce the next Public Service Announcement for the Office of the Hennepin County Attorney. 

In Spring 2007, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman with the support and cooperation of the Minneapolis Downtown Business Council, Metro Transit Authority and the Minneapolis Police Department unveiled four Public Service Announcements that addressed juvenile violence aboard public transit systems .The PSAs vary in length; from 30 seconds to 60 seconds.

Now it's your turn!  Get out the camera, mini-cam, cell phone, digital and produce the next PSA Video. We believe in you, and know you can do it!

Take part in the Video Contest Competition, sponsored by the Office of the Hennepin County Attorney, and write-produce-edit the next Public Service Announcement.  The theme is "Respect".  Click on the link, Video Public Service Announcement, and take a look at last year's announcements then produce two 30-second videos.  We know you can do it!

Produce your video alone, or get together with your friends and produce two 30-second public service announcements.  This year's theme is "Respect".  The deadline to submit your DVD is midnight May 30, 2008.
