Law clerk program

The County Attorney’s Office hires law students for a hands-on, challenging work experience as compensated law clerks. The program is highly competitive.

Clerkships are offered in the summer and during the academic year. About 40 law clerks work in the office and openings vary according to turnover. We accept applications year-round and interview candidates as vacancies occur. We may post opportunities with the local law schools and may participate in on-campus interviews.

Externships and internships

Students may gain valuable learning and experience from working as an intern or extern.

An externship is an experience for school credit as part of an education training program. An internship is an experience not for school credit in which the intern gains on-the-job experience. Externs are hired as unpaid trainees.* Interns are hired in unpaid temporary positions. Both are hired for a specific need or project on a case-by-case basis. Interested students are welcome to contact the office to inquire about opportunities.

Step-Up Student Interns

Each summer the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office participates in STEP-UP, a summer jobs program for Minneapolis youth. Applications are handled through the City of Minneapolis: STEP-UP Summer Jobs Program.
