Woman charged with kidnapping Brooklyn Park baby
A 34-year-old St. Paul woman was charged with kidnapping her friend’s two-month-old son Thursday in a criminal complaint filed by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office.
Thalia Tonice Benson was charged with the single count and was expected to make a first court appearance Friday.
According to the criminal complaint (PDF), Benson was a friend of the mother of the baby and was visiting in the Brooklyn Park apartment Monday night. The mother drifted off to sleep on the couch with her baby and her three-year-old. When she woke up about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, Benson and the baby were gone. The mother called Benson, who said the baby was on the couch when she left and suggested the mother’s grandparents, who were sleeping in the bedroom, had taken the baby to bed with them.
About 6 a.m., Benson returned to the Brooklyn Park apartment and asked the mother if she had found the baby. The grandparents were awakened and they said they knew nothing about it. The mother then called police.
Brooklyn Park Police became suspicious and asked Benson if they could follow her back to her apartment and search it. She agreed and when they arrived in the St. Paul apartment parking lot, they found the baby being cared for by Benson’s boyfriend, the complaint states.
Both the boyfriend and Benson said that Benson had told her boyfriend that she was pregnant with his child and then that she had just given birth and this was their son, according to the complaint.
