Harper charged with murder in son's beating

Reggie Delanie Harper was charged with second-degree intentional murder in the beating death of his young son, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Friday.

Harper, 23, of Brooklyn Park was charged in connection with the Tuesday death of his nearly two-year-old son Kazerion Harper.

“This is a sickening case of child abuse where our office and county child protection did all it could within the law to protect Kazerion and his older brother,” Freeman said. “The mother had done everything social workers asked and, as required by law, she was reunited with her children. Unfortunately, despite an order of protection against him, she allowed her abusive boyfriend back into the house. The complaint alleges that in a moment of shocking violence, Mr. Harper punched his son to death.”

According to the criminal complaint, the child was in his crib but was fussing and crying. When the mother picked him up to settle him down, Harper grabbed the child, put him on the floor and punched him repeatedly in the chest.

Harper’s first appearance will be Monday afternoon.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office also went to court Friday with a petition to terminate the parental rights of Harper and the mother regarding the older child. The child was put in an out-of-home placement and the next hearing on terminating their parental rights is scheduled for Dec. 23.
