Revamped county attorney website now online to better serve users

Tuesday, June 03, 2014

A redesigned website for the Hennepin County Attorney's Office went live this morning, and promises to be easier to use and compatible on all mobile devices.

The new website, still at www.hennepinattorney.org, has an enhanced search function that should make it much easier for users to quickly find the information they need about the state’s largest public law office. The site also includes an improved community crime page with interactive map features so county residents can track some of the crime in their neighborhoods.

“These days, people don't just expect that an organization will have an excellent website, they demand it,” Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said. “We wanted to meet those demands and I’m pleased that we now have a site that allows anyone to access the information, or people, they need quickly and easily. I have always believed that there should be as few barriers as possible between voters and their elected officials and this website puts that belief into practice.”

The new website uses the same platform as the updated Hennepin.us, which allowed the county attorney’s office to improve the performance of its site while saving taxpayer dollars.  The design is mobile-first, ensuring that the content displays just as well on smart phones and tablets as it does on web browsers.  The navigation was re-organized and the content re-written in plain language to better meet the needs of community members.  The county attorney’s website will continue to have regularly updated stories in its news section discussing the major issues the civil, criminal, child protection and other divisions are working on.

The decision to implement these changes was informed by the county attorney’s office’s diversity and inclusion initiative.  In addition to improved search and mobile-friendly design, the website is fully ADA-compliant.  The next step is adding some content translated into Spanish, Somali and Hmong.

The move will also save taxpayer dollars. After Hennepin County launched its new website in October, it invited departments with separate websites to consider leveraging the improved web platform and consolidate vendors, which would decrease costs. The county attorney’s office is the first department to take advantage of this opportunity.  Other departments with external sites, such as the library, are in the process of joining this enterprise-wide solution.

The redesign was a collaborative effort between the county attorney’s office, Hennepin County and its vendors High Monkey and Atomic Data.  It builds off of the design by Azul 7.
