Waconia man charged in two U of M rapes
A Waconia man was charged in two separate rapes at the University of Minnesota, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Monday.
Daniel Drill-Mellum, 22, was charged with one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct in one of the cases and one count each of first, second and third-degree criminal sexual conduct in the other case. Drill-Mellum was living outside of the United States and was arrested Christmas Eve when his flight arrived at Minneapolis-St. Paul airport.
“This violent behavior injured and humiliated these young women and it offends our sense of decency,” Freeman said. “Our office worked hard with police and these courageous women to make sure there was enough admissible evidence so that we could bring charges.”
The two sexual assaults occurred within eight days of each other in the autumn of 2014. According to the criminal complaint, on Oct. 31, 2014, a then 18-year-old woman met Drill-Mellum for the first time at a party at the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, 400 10th St. SE. Drill-Mellum eventually led her into the laundry room where they began kissing. He tried to reach under her shirt, but the young woman pushed his hand away. However, he pushed her against the wall and held her hands down, while he pulled down her underwear.
The woman kept resisting and finally Drill-Mellum pushed her to the floor and raped her. When he was done, he returned to the party and she returned to her dorm room. The next morning, she told her roommate what happened and went to the University of Minnesota Medical Center and told them she had been sexually assaulted, but ultimately did not report it to the police, the complaint states. However, when she learned in October 2015 that Drill-Mellum was seen at another party on campus, she made a police report on Nov. 18 of the assault against her.
In the second case, police were called by a 19-year-old woman about 12:30 a.m. Nov. 8. She said that she was at a party with friends and met Drill-Mellum there. At some point, he asked if she would go with him to his apartment across the street at 1015 University Ave. S.E. to get more alcohol. Once at his apartment, they began kissing, but when he tried to take off her clothes, she said no and told him she wanted to go back to the party, according to the complaint.
Instead, he held her down on a bed and sexually assaulted her. Police called an ambulance after talking to her and the medical examination found she was bleeding and had multiple abrasions and tearing, the complaint states.
Prosecutors have asked for bail of $500,000.
