Ahmed Abdi was charged in a juvenile petition with second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Friday.

Abdi is charged in the death of Ayan Abdulahi, 21, of Bloomington who was shot in the head while lying on a bed in Abdi’s room in an apartment at 2440 Portland Ave. S. in Minneapolis.

According to the juvenile petition, Abdi was staying with his aunt and uncle. About 1:45 p.m. on April 11, Abdi came out to the kitchen and had a brief conversation with his uncle and then went back into his bedroom. About 10 minutes later, the uncle heard a gunshot and saw Abdi run out the back door.

One witness said that he had spent part of the previous day with the couple listening to music and smoking marijuana. Another man said that late on the night before the murder, he was leaving a liquor store when someone he knew came up to him and took a bottle of liquor. As the two men struggled over the bottle, Abdi appeared, pointed a gun at the man and threatened to shoot him, according to the petition.

Abdi was arrested in Kansas City, Mo. and proceedings are underway to bring him back to Minnesota. The county attorney’s office will also ask to have him stand trial as an adult.
