Ticourtier Collins has been charged with first-degree assault in the severe beating of his 20-month-old daughter, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Friday.

Collins, 21, of Minneapolis is charged with beating the girl so badly that she suffered traumatic brain injuries, a lacerated spleen, rib and pelvic fractures and other injuries.

According to the criminal complaint, the victim’s mother told police that she left her daughter with Collins in their apartment at Ninth Street and Park Avenue South Sunday morning while she went to work. The child was fine when she left, the mother said, but she received a call in the afternoon from Collins, who told her he and a neighbor had taken the girl to the hospital.

Collins initially told police that he took the girl to his uncle’s house where his daughter and another child ran into each other with their heads. He later told another person that he took the child to another girlfriend’s house, and then left for about three hours, the criminal complaint states.

However, a surveillance camera at the apartment house shows the mother leaving at 9:51 a.m. No one left the apartment again until Collins does at 2:05 p.m. and returns at 2:10 p.m. Then, at 3:12 p.m., Collins is seen frantically leaving the apartment with the girl, contacting a neighbor and heading for Hennepin County Medical Center, according to the complaint.

Doctors concluded that given the full extent of her injuries, the child suffered the severe head injuries on Sunday. The girl remains in the hospital in critical condition, and her neurodevelopmental prognoses remains guarded, the complaint states.

Collins is expected to make his first court appearance Monday.
