Brothers charged in stabbing of two men in downtown Minneapolis

Tuesday, January 12, 2016

Two brothers were charged with two counts each of attempted murder in a downtown stabbing over the weekend, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Tuesday.

Cornelius Green, 22, of Minneapolis and Devon Green, 23, with no permanent address, were charged in the stabbing of two men about 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning near the Choice Gentlemen’s Club, 245 Second Ave. N. They are expected to make their first court appearance Wednesday and prosecutors will be seeking bail of $500,000 on each of them.

According to the criminal complaint, a man ran toward police near First Avenue North and Third Street North asking for help because he was bleeding from the face. Police called an ambulance for him and then continued to the gentlemen’s club, where witnesses had called police on another man who was lying on the sidewalk, bleeding from the neck.

Three witnesses there told police that they saw five men beat two other men and then jump into a black Cadillac sports utility vehicle. One witness provided police with a  partial license number and the two other witnesses stood by a bloody knife one of them saw a passenger throw out the window until police arrived, the complaint states.

Police learned that the black SUV was near Hennepin County Medical Center and officers stopped the vehicle and detained the four men inside. They then learned that the Green brothers had been dropped off at the medical center’s emergency room. Devon Green was being treated for a cut on his hand, which he claimed he received from falling on the ice, according to the complaint.

Both the two victims and the suspects were in a pizza place about the same time, roughly two blocks from where the stabbing took place. As the victims were walking, they passed the black SUV and words were exchanged, but the victims kept walking. However, the Greens got out of the vehicle, ran up behind the victims and began stabbing them, the complaint states.

The victim who ran up to the officers suffered cuts to his face and head. He told police that he was held by others as he was being stabbed. The other victim was stabbed in the neck from behind and his jugular vein was severed and his carotid artery was cut approximately 40 percent, according to the complaint.
