Two juveniles charged in shooting outside Foot Locker

Two Minneapolis teenagers were charged with attempted murder in the shooting of a man outside a Brooklyn Center Foot Locker store, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Friday.

Gary Lamar Townsend, 17, was charged with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree and second-degree assault. Daniel James Hart, 17, was charged with aiding and abetting attempted second-degree murder and second-degree assault charges. The county attorney’s office filed motions to have both certified as adults and Townsend already indicated he will not fight that motion.

According to the juvenile petition filed Friday, police were called to the Kids Foot Locker store on Shingle Creek Parkway about 9:40 a.m. Sunday on a report of people with weapons. When police arrived, they found people waiting patiently in a long line for the store to open because a new Michael Jordan shoe was going on sale. However, there was no sign of any guns and the police returned to the parking lot and watched.

Just before 10 a.m., the officers heard about a dozen gunshots in front of the store. They saw Hart helping an injured Townsend move away from the shooting. Hart eventually fled and police put Townsend, who had been shot in the leg, in the back of a squad car until an ambulance arrived, the petition states.

Police also found a victim lying on the ground in front of the store. He had been shot in the stomach. Next to him was a witness, with a gun in his hand, which he dropped when ordered by police. The witness told police he was with the victim when Townsend started fighting with the victim over the shoes. Townsend pulled out a gun and shot the victim, at which point the witness pulled out his own gun and shot at Townsend, according to the petition. The witness has a Minnesota permit to carry.

Two other people said they saw Hart helping the wounded Townsend get away, but they followed them because they were angry Townsend shot someone. Hart picked up Townsend’s gun, pointed it at the two people following them and told them to get away, the petition states. Hart got in a car and fled.

Two shots hit the victim in the liver, one shot hit him in the kidney and the other hit his arm. He still is in the hospital, according to the petition.
