Lolita Ulloa discusses sexual assault on "Breaking the News"

Wednesday, April 05, 2017

Deputy Hennepin County Attorney Lolita Ulloa was one of four women featured on KARE-11 Tuesday night discussing sexual assault.

Ulloa and the others were interviewed by reporter Jana Shortal for the news show, “Breaking the News.” They were all part of the Sexual Assault Multidisciplinary Action Response Team (SMART) which has been working in Hennepin County since 2010 to improve the way victims of sexual assault are treated.

“Our role is to evaluate and review cases for possible charges in sexual assault cases,” Ulloa said in the interview. “In many circumstances, these are some of the most horrific crimes because it’s not only your body, it’s your mind, your sense of safety. Making sure we are talking to victim-survivors about their case, what we can prove, what we can’t and what are the pros and cons, what are the expectations.”

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office has been part of SMART nearly since its inception. The collaboration with non-profit advocates who work with sexual assault victims, nurses, police officers and prosecutors allows everyone to critique everyone else’s procedures in order to bring about justice for the victim, whatever the victim considers that to be.

April is National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. In addition, SMART will be releasing its report next week which includes protocols for each of the groups who work with sexual assault victims.
