College student charged in shooting death outside Minneapolis bar


A North Dakota community college student has been charged in the shooting death early Saturday morning outside the Blue Nile Nightclub in Minneapolis, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Wednesday.

Cedric Chappell, Jr, 21, who had lived in south Minneapolis, was charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Willie James Smith III, 22, of St. Paul and attempted second-degree murder for shooting at another man.

According to the criminal complaint (PDF), a fight broke out at the bar, located at 2027 E. Franklin Ave. and it spilled out into the parking lot. Chappell shot Smith in the chest and the other man in the leg.
