A Minneapolis man was charged (PDF) in the shooting death at Champions Bar this past summer Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Tuesday.
Ron Christopher Powell, 42, was charged with one count of murder in the second degree for killing Mark Anthony Stephenson, 52, who was not the intended target of the shooting. Powell was also charged with one count of assault in the second degree for shooting another man in both legs and one count of a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
On August 8th at approximately 1:30 a.m. police responded to a call about a shooting at Champions Bar on Lake Street. Stephenson was bleeding heavily and transported to HCMC, where he died from a gunshot wound in the femoral artery.

He approached the defendant and began punching him. Powell fell to the floor, pulled out a gun and fired three shots. Surveillance video from the bar shows the same sequence of events.
The defendant is a felon who is prohibited from possessing a gun and has a 2005 conviction for illegally possessing a firearm. He was arrested over the weekend in Fargo, ND.
