No charges in pond drowning deaths

No felony charges will be filed against the driver of the car that plunged into a retention pond in St. Louis Park last fall, killing two young children, Hennepin county Attorney Mike Freeman announced Wednesday.

Marion Noel Guerrido was driving with five children in the car about 7 a.m. on Nov. 21. While on the ramp from Minnesota 7 to Minnesota 100, Guerrido’s car went out of control and plunged into the retention pond. She tried to rescue the children, but it took emergency crews to pull them out. Two of the children, Alarious Guerrido, 7, and Zenavia Rennie, 5, died as a result.

“This is a horrible, horrible tragedy and there is nothing the criminal justice system can or should do about it,” Freeman said.

The accident reconstruction, tests and interviews with Guerrido indicate she was not speeding, did not have drugs or alcohol in her system and had not been on her cell phone. Instead, she seems to have overcorrected and spun out and left the road.
