Minneapolis man charged in murder of his mother

Michael Gallagher was charged with killing his mother in her apartment, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Monday.

Gallagher, 62, of Minneapolis, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of his mother, Patricia Ann Gallagher, 89, in her downtown Minneapolis apartment Friday morning. Gallagher is expected to make his first court appearance Tuesday and prosecutors will be asking for bail of $2 million.

According to the criminal complaint, Gallagher called 911 and told the dispatcher he had killed his mother. He surrendered to police when they arrived shortly after 9 a.m.
Gallagher had been to his mother’s apartment at 111 Marquette Avenue on Thursday to help her with cleaning and other chores. He told police that he was despondent over bedbugs in the apartment and nothing he used would get rid of them. He also was convinced the landlord would not be renewing her lease and she had many things he would have to move, the complaint states.

In the apartment was a sculpture of Michael Gallagher and he grabbed it and began beating her on the head with it. He also tried smothering her with a pillow, strangling her with his hands and suffocating her with a garbage bag, according to the complaint.
