Brooklyn Park man sentenced for murder of girlfriend

A  Brooklyn Park man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Wednesday.
Toby Nicholas Clarke, 38, pleaded guilty in August to second-degree, unintentional murder in the death of his girlfriend, 36-year-old Krista Ambers.
According to the criminal complaint, at about 3 a.m. on August 5, 2015, Clarke called 911 to report an unconscious woman. When Brooklyn Park police arrived at Ambers’ home, Clarke was there and Ambers was unconscious with bruising on her arms and her neck. She was pronounced dead a short time later and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner determined she died from strangulation. Clarke first told police that they were only friends, but then admitted they had been in a relationship for three years and that he choked her while they were engaged in rough sex.
At his sentencing Tuesday afternoon, the courtroom was crowded with Ambers’ family members as well as Clarke’s. Four victim impact statements were given, including one from Amber’s mother Carol and also a co-worker from Children’s Hospital where Amber worked for 15 years.
Clarke, who has a history of domestic abuse charges and an order for protection filed against him, addressed the court and both families, saying he was sorry for the pain he has caused.
