Additional people charged in beating of children in Minneapolis church

Charges were filed against additional people, including the pastor’s wife, in the case of child abuse against the children of parishioners of a Minneapolis church, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Tuesday.

Khu Moo, 19, of Robbinsdale, was charged with one count each of aiding and abetting second-degree assault and third-degree assault.  Seung Joo Choi Kim, 49, was charged with aiding and abetting second-degree assault; aiding and abetting third-degree assault; third-degree assault-past pattern of child abuse, and two counts of malicious punishment of a child.

Kim’s husband and son, Dong Kim, 51, and Joo Kim, 19, each were charged Dec. 20 with a count of second-degree assault, third-degree assault and malicious punishment of a child. Dong Kim at the time of the assaults was the pastor of the Good News Church, 3000 Broadway Ave. W.

“Minneapolis police have done an excellent job of conducting follow-up interviews and finding more people we could charge with these terrible beatings of young children,” Freeman said. “We are appalled that a place of peace and safety was turned into a house of violence. The investigation continues.”

According to the criminal complaints, on Dec. 17, a 14-year-old boy ran to a house on Upton Avenue North where a woman was shoveling snow. The boy was wearing only a T-shirt and shorts in the cold weather and asked for her help. Once inside her house, he showed her whip marks and bruises from beatings.

Beginning in late November, the Kims and Moo at various times hit him with boards, electrical cords, hands, fists and feet in order to punish him. All of those incidents took place in the church, usually in the basement, the criminal complaints state.

The 14-year-old also told police that Seung Kim had struck his two-year-old sister in the face with a paddle when his sister began crying after being told by Seung Kim to stand for hours with her hands in the air, according to the complaint.

Seung Kim’s whereabouts are not known and the complaint was issued as a warrant for her arrest.
