Zyere Porter sentenced to 360 months for role in Boom Island shooting

Zyere Jakay Porter, 24, was sentenced to 360 months for his role in a shooting at Boom Island in June 2025 that killed Stageina Whiting and injured others.

Mr. Porter previously pleaded guilty to the following charges:

One count of aiding/abetting second-degree intentional murder
Two counts of aiding/abetting a drive-by shooting

He was sentenced to 360 months for the second-degree murder charge, as well as 88 months and 98 months for the aiding/abetting a drive-by shooting charges.

The sentences will run concurrently and are guideline sentences as laid out in the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines.

“Stageina Whiting was an innocent bystander who was killed because of the role Mr. Porter played in the extreme violence that day,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “Numerous other individuals were injured and my thoughts are with all those impacted, especially Stageina’s loved ones. Today’s sentence does not return anything or anyone that was lost that day, but it ensures that the community will be protected from Mr. Porter.”

Mr. Porter has 432 days of credit for time already served.
