Hennepin County Attorney’s Office to begin prosecution of Vance Boelter following federal sentencing

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office will now move forward with its prosecution of Vance Boelter for the June 2025 shootings of Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, the attempted shooting of their daughter, Hope, and the assassination of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman along with her husband, Mark, and their dog, Gilbert.

Mr. Boelter’s sentencing today in federal court has no impact on the following state charges he faces:

First-degree premeditated murder (Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman)
First-degree premeditated murder (Mark Hortman)
Attempted first-degree murder (Sen. John Hoffman)
Attempted first-degree murder (Yvette Hoffman)
Attempted first-degree murder (Hope Hoffman)
Attempted first-degree murder (Rep. Kristin Bahner)
Felony cruelty to an animal (Gilbert Hortman)
Impersonating a police officer

“While Mr. Boelter’s case has been in federal court, we have been preparing to prosecute him in state court. That time has arrived and Mr. Boelter will soon face accountability in a Hennepin County courtroom,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “The targeted political violence he committed was horrific. My thoughts are with Melissa and Mark’s family, as well as John, Yvette, and Hope, as the state prosecution moves forward.”

The sentence for a guilty verdict on any of the first-degree premeditated murder charges is mandatory life in prison without the possibility of parole. State sentences are not affected by presidential pardons.

Mr. Boelter’s first appearance is scheduled for August 3.
