Hennepin County Attorney’s Office charges Tyler O’Brien for recent Minneapolis standoff, firing shots at law enforcement

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office charged Tyler Joseph O’Brien, 31, with numerous counts related to a standoff between Mr. O’Brien and local law enforcement on June 9.

Mr. O’Brien has remained in custody since his arrest on June 9 and is charged with the following counts:

18 counts of first-degree assault
3 counts of prohibited possession of a firearm

“I am grateful this situation was resolved without loss of life or significant physical injury to those involved. Responding law enforcement showed great restraint and a commitment to deescalation,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “It was a frightening scene playing out in the middle of a residential neighborhood and Mr. O’Brien knowingly endangered the lives of law enforcement officers and the public. He will be held accountable and the community will be protected from him.”

At the time of the incident, Mr. O’Brien had an active warrant issued by the Minnesota Department of Corrections on a previous weapons offense that occurred outside Hennepin County.

Mr. O’Brien fired approximately 15 to 20 rounds through windows, doors, and walls in the direction of law enforcement officers and civilians. There was a three-year-old present in the unit at the time of the first shots who was later evacuated.

After several hours of negotiations between crisis negotiators and Mr. O’Brien, he agreed to surrender, exited the building, and was taken into custody.

Mr. O’Brien was convicted for first-degree assault in Nebraska in 2015 and is prohibited from possessing a firearm.
