Minneapolis man charged for assaulting MPD officers

A Minneapolis man has been charged with three counts of first-degree assault in connection to a recent incident involving Minneapolis Police, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office announced Friday.

Zedrick Cooper, 26, was charged for assaulting Minneapolis Police officers on January 14.

According to the criminal complaint, on January 14, police were notified that a male was driving a black SUV, and pointed a gun at multiple victims at the Full Stop Gas Station, near Lowry Avenue North and Logan Avenue North. When officers arrived on scene, Cooper fled in his vehicle.

Cooper attempted to turn east on Dowling Avenue North in Minneapolis, when he slid across the intersection, struck a stop sign and became stuck. Six Minneapolis Police officers then approached the SUV, giving verbal commands for Cooper to put his hands up and exit the vehicle, the complaint states.

Cooper continued to try to flee, but was unsuccessful. After several attempts to try to get into the vehicle, an officer used his flashlight to break the driver’s side window, and saw that Cooper had a gun, the complaint continues.

Cooper fired multiple shots at officers as they ran back to their squad cars to seek cover, and officers returned fire. Cooper suffered several gunshot wounds and is currently being treated at North Memorial Medical Center, according to the criminal complaint.
