Man sentenced to four years in prison for killing brother

Garrett Bruce Ittel, 26, was sentenced to 48 months in prison for killing his 27-year-old brother Jamison Ittel, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Wednesday.

Garrett Ittel, 26, pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter on July 13 and Judge Shereen Askalani sentenced him to four years in prison on Wednesday morning in the stabbing death of his brother Jamison.

According to the criminal complaint, on Jan. 9, police were called to 5300 Annapolis Lane in Plymouth after receiving a report that a man had stabbed his brother. Police found Garrett outside on the steps of the apartment complex, standing over the body of Jamison who was dead from a stabbing in the heart.

Investigators spoke with the mother of the brothers who had called 911 after receiving a call from Jamison saying Garrett had stabbed him. Earlier in the evening, the mother had received separate calls from both men and they said they were having a fight.

In court at the sentencing, Garrett and Jamison’s mother Dona Ittel said their family is broken and that what happened that night in January was a horrible accident. She said the brothers were best friends and never fought. She also stated that the family stands by Garrett.

When Judge Askalani gave Garrett a chance to address the court, he recited this quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” Then Garrett said he would never forgot the moment Jamison died in his arms. He went on to thank his attorneys and apologize to his family.
