Jamar Pierre Mullins, 33, has been charged in the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Lonzo Allen Washington, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Thursday.
Mullins, of Minneapolis, was charged with intentional, second-degree murder and made his first court appearance on Aug. 14.
According to the criminal complaint, on August 9, at approximately 8:11 pm, officers were called to the 1000 block of Morgan Ave. N. on the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Washington lying on the street with a single gunshot wound to his chest. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
A witness told police that Washington had said earlier in the day that Mullins had taken another man’s phone and disrespected Washington and challenged him to a fight. Later, the witness met up with Washington and when the two men were standing on the steps of an apartment complex on Morgan, Mullins walked up. The witness said Washington and Mullins were speaking to each other and then started throwing punches. Then the witness said he heard a shot, saw the flash of the muzzle and smoke and Washington lying in the street.
Surveillance video from the apartment complex captured the events leading up to the shooting. Mullins was arrested the next day at his girlfriend’s house.
