Brooklyn Park man sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting at more than a dozen people

Wednesday,

Hennepin County Court District Judge Kathryn Quaintance sentenced a Brooklyn Park man to 240 months in prison for his involvement in a drive-by shooting, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Wednesday.

On March 13, a Hennepin County District Court jury found Deshawn Devontae Wilson, 21, guilty of 11 counts of second-degree assault, one count for each adult who was outside the North Minneapolis home where the shots were fired. In addition, he was convicted of one count of using a dangerous weapon.

According to the criminal complaint and testimony in court, on June 4, 2017, Wilson sent threatening messages to some people who lived in a home near 34th Ave N. and Oliver Ave. N. At about 7 p.m. that night, Wilson arrived at the house with a group of people. He and another man fired nine shots at an area where there were 11 adults and at least three children. One man was shot as he was trying to a get a child away from the gunfire.

The jury had quickly found Wilson guilty of all charges and found numerous aggravating factors in the case, including that the shooting occurred in a residential neighborhood, two homes were shot and there was a pregnant woman in the area at the time of the shooting.
