A Hennepin County District Court Judge found David Campbell guilty on several counts of criminal sexual conduct, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Wednesday.
Campbell, 60, a former Minneapolis police officer, will be sentenced on Dec. 3 and lawyers on both sides will be arguing for a prison term between 36 months and 57 months. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office will argue for 57 months.
Hennepin County District Court Judge Tamara Garcia, in a brief hearing Wednesday morning, announced her verdict of guilty on three counts of criminal sexual conduct in the third-degree, two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of terroristic threats and one count of stalking.
During jury selection, Campbell requested a stipulated evidence trial, where both sides submit the evidence and their legal arguments to the judge. Judge Garcia said she would file her full, written verdict order by the end of the day.
According to the criminal complaint, last fall a Bloomington Police detective met with a 16-year-old girl who said she was the girlfriend of Campbell’s son, so she had been living with the family in hotels in Bloomington, Roseville and Minneapolis.
Beginning in February 2017, Campbell bought her underwear and bras at Victoria’s Secret and told her to use his phone to take pictures of herself wearing them. Campbell later began sexually assaulting her, including when he was on duty and she was in the squad car with him.
During one of those ride-alongs, Campbell told her that if she reported what was happening or did anything that would result in his children being taken from him, he would have to shoot her in the head.
