An 18-yearold was charged with assault after pointing a gun at a Minneapolis police officer, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Monday.
Antonio Cortez Rule, Jr., of Minneapolis, was charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and prohibited person with a firearm.
According to the criminal complaint, just after 7 pm on Sept. 28, police were on patrol when they saw a group of men obstructing traffic at 808 Lowry Avenue North. Officers tried to make contact with the group, including Rule, but they refused commands to stop.
Rule began putting his hands in his waistband, indicating to officers he possessed a gun. Rule was ordered to stop multiple times, but he refused and began to run. Officers chased him on foot to the block of 30th Avenue North. One of the officers reached a house and Rule came around the home with his gun drawn and pointed at the officer, according to the complaint.
Fearing for his life, the officer shot at Rule and then Rule dropped his gun and fled. The officer stayed with the weapon and Rule was apprehended nearby.
Rule also was adjudicated delinquent earlier this year for a robbery, which made it a crime for him to possess the gun, the complaint states.
Rule is expected to make his first court appearance Tuesday. Prosecutors will be seeking bail of $140,000.
