Brooklyn Center man charged with murder in bar parking lot shooting

Murder and assault charges were filed against a man who fired his gun into a crowd of people outside a Minneapolis bar, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Monday.

Anthony Cannady, 47, of Brooklyn Center, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of 42-year-old Steven Fields of Richfield. He also was charged with three counts of second-degree assault for inflicting gunshot wounds on three others. Cannady is scheduled to make his first court appearance Tuesday.

According to the criminal complaint, about 11:45 p.m. on Sept. 7, Minneapolis police were called to a shooting in the parking lot of Cliff and Norm’s bar, 2024 Washington Ave. N. They also recovered numerous discharged cartridge casings.

Earlier in the evening, Cannady got into a fight with another bar patron and the bouncer broke it up, but had to spray Cannady with mace, the complaint states. That made Cannady angry and he made threats against the bouncer as he left the bar.

When he returned, he fired into a crowd in the parking lot, striking Fields in the head and inflicting non life-threatening injuries on three others, according to the complaint. Neither Fields nor the injured were the bouncer Cannady had threatened.
