Minneapolis man sentenced to 450 months in prison for 2018 murder

7/12/2019

A Minneapolis man was sentenced to 450 months in prison for murdering Frankie Golden in 2018, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Friday.

Antwan Darnell Cosey, 38, was convicted on June 18, 2019 by a Hennepin County jury following a week-long trial and was sentenced today to more than 37 years in prison.

According to testimony in the court and the criminal complaint, shortly after 6 p.m. on Feb. 27, 2018, witnesses saw Golden standing on the sidewalk outside a house on E. 18th St. waiting to visit his nine-month-old son who lived there. Cosey approached and told Golden to move. They argued and Cosey pulled a gun from his waistband and shot once, striking Golden in the chest, killing him.

Four days later, Cosey bought a bus ticket and fled the state. He was apprehended in Florida on March 9, 2018.

Cosey faced a maximum sentence of up to 40 years in prison based on his extensive criminal history, which includes violent offenses in which Cosey used or brandished weapons.

Several members of Golden’s family spoke at the sentencing about the large void his murder left in their tight knit family. Cosey maintained that he acted in self-defense, a claim that Hennepin County District Court Judge Kathryn Quaintance dismissed based on the jury’s verdict and the evidence presented during the trial. She cited Cosey’s long history of serious offenses and the “senseless” nature of the killing in imposing the 450-month sentence.
