On Jan. 24, Andre Ogburn, 32, pleaded guilty to criminal vehicular homicide, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday. Ogburn was set for trial Jan. 27. He will be sentenced March 30. Ogburn will receive a 92-month sentence to the Department of Corrections.
According to the criminal complaint, on Sept. 16, police received a call about a potential murder that occurred at 12th Ave. N. and Knox Ave. N. The identified caller informed police that a witness would be waiting at the scene to inform them of the incident. When police arrived at that location, a woman flagged them down and exited her vehicle.
The female driver informed police that while driving, she noticed a human body lying on the road near the 7th St. N. exit. When she got out of her vehicle to help the individual, it was evident that the person was already dead. An SUV nearby was damaged, with another person who appeared to be unconscious or deceased, the complaint continues.
Surveillance footage from the area confirms the female driver dropped Ogburn off at Mickey’s parking lot and blood found on the passenger side seat was collected for forensic testing.
A bus driver for Metro Mobility who witnessed the incident told police that the SUV swerved around the left side of his bus before leaving the road, striking a tree and then rolling back down towards the roadway. The witness also saw a man thrown from the SUV where he was found by the female driver, the complaint continues.
When police contacted the owner of the SUV, she informed them that Ogburn had borrowed the vehicle. She also told police that Ogburn came to her residence on Sept. 17 and let her know what happened to the SUV: he was driving, attempted to avoid the Metro Mobility bus, lost control and flipped the vehicle. Ogburn then told the owner that he fled the scene due to his DWIs and should not have been driving, and that a woman drove him to Mickey’s parking lot, the complaint says.
