Minneapolis man charged with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide

A Minneapolis man has been charged with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide for crashing into a vehicle, killing the driver, and fleeing the scene, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Tuesday.

Abdullahi Ahmed Mohamed, 22, has also been charged with two counts of criminal vehicular operation for the high-speed collision that injured another driver, and for leaving the scene of the collision.

According to the criminal complaint, on June 8, around 5:20 a.m., Minneapolis Police went to the intersection of Lowry Avenue Northeast and Marshall Street Northeast on the report of a crash. When they arrived, police saw a multi-vehicle crash with a Chevy Tahoe “completely engulfed in flames.” The driver of the Chevy Tahoe was trapped inside and died on-site.

Witnesses state that they saw Mohamed’s silver Honda Accord speeding on Lowry Avenue Northeast, run a red light and smash into the victim’s Chevy Tahoe. Both the Tahoe and Accord then struck a Honda Odyssey which had been stopped at the intersection’s red light. The victim in the Odyssey sought medical attention for abdominal pain, the complaint continues.

A blood trail leading from Mohamed’s Accord led police to an area behind an adjacent building where Mohamed was found. He suffered multiple injuries, though told officers he was not in any of the vehicles. Later, he stated he was a passenger, the complaint says.

Two passengers in the Accord were also injured, but said they had no knowledge of who else was in the car. Both had nearly $4,000 in cash on hand. An open bottle of Hennessy Cognac, a marijuana blunt, and an unlabeled pill bottle were found in the Accord, the complaint states. Traffic video of the crash shows Mohamed running a red light and speeding into the intersection where he hit the Tahoe which immediately started on fire.

There is currently a warrant out for Mohamed’s arrest.
