Teen pleads guilty to second-degree murder

3/3/2020

On March 2, Jered Ohsman pleaded guilty to fatally shooting a man in June 2019, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Tuesday.

Ohsman, 17, was scheduled to stand trial as an adult but entered a straight plea Monday to intentional second-degree murder. He will be sentenced April 17. Ohsman still faces two first-degree aggravated robbery charges.

According to the criminal complaint, on June 11, Steven Markey, 39, was shot at the intersection of 14th Ave. NE and Tyler St. NE in Minneapolis. Police investigation found that Ohsman and a 15-year-old accomplice planned to steal the victim’s car and rob him.

During the robbery, the teens wore bandannas to hide their faces and pulled their firearms out as they approached, then shot the victim multiple times. The victim later died from his gunshot wounds.

Surveillance video showed the teens fleeing south on Tyler Street, where they changed their clothing and hid a backpack under a set of stairs. Officers recovered the backpack and found a 9mm Glock firearm, a .22 caliber Ruger firearm, along with pieces of clothing and other personal items belonging to the teens.
