On September 10, a Hennepin County Grand Jury indicted Tyree Terrell Johnson on two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, and one count of kidnapping, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office announced Monday.
Johnson, 29, of Minneapolis, was unanimously indicted by the grand jury September 10 on three separate felony charges:
- Count I: First-degree criminal sexual conduct – previous sex offense conviction and heinous element
- Count II: First-degree criminal sexual conduct – previous sex offense conviction and aggravating factor
- Count III: Kidnapping
Both criminal sexual conduct charges have a mandatory life in prison sentence, with Count I stipulating that the sentence be served without the possibility of parole.
Bail has been set at $2M. Jury trial is set to begin October 12 at 9 a.m.
According to the criminal complaint, on June 24, Minneapolis Police responded to a sexual assault report at 2000 Glenwood Avenue North where they meet with and spoke to the adult female victim. She was found crying on the front steps, with a swollen eye and bleeding mouth. Shortly after officers arrived, the victim was taken to North Memorial Medical Center by emergency medical services.
The victim informed investigators that before police arrived, she was near her home on the 300 block of Newton Avenue North when Johnson approached, asking for a lighter. When the victim stopped to give Johnson a lighter, Johnson punched the victim in the face and grabbed the victim by her neck and covered her mouth so she could not scream, the complaint states.
Johnson then dragged the victim behind a nearby church where he continued to punch and choke her. Johnson proceeded to then sexually assault the victim by forcing her to engage in various sexual acts. The victim was eventually able to escape and run to 2000 Glenwood Avenue North where police would later find her, the complaint says.
The victim had a sexual assault examination performed, where the DNA recovered from her body matched the known profile of Johnson, who is a convicted predatory offender due to a prior first-degree criminal sexual conduct conviction.
