Mississippi man charged in fatal shooting in downtown Minneapolis

A Mississippi man was charged in a fatal shooting which occurred in a downtown Minneapolis parking lot over the weekend, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.

Kevion Jamal Gibbs, 23, was charged with intentional second-degree murder for killing a 33-year-old male victim in a parking lot near Augie’s in downtown Minneapolis. After Gibbs shot the victim, Metro Transit police officers chased after Gibbs, and in pursuit, shot him once in the leg.

Gibbs is set to make his first appearance June 9 at 1:30 p.m.

According to the criminal complaint, on June 5, around 2 a.m., Metro Transit officers by the Fifth Avenue and Hennepin Avenue Light Rail Transit platform noticed arguing between people behind a parking lot near Augie’s. When the group got into the parking lot, the victim punched a man who fell to the ground. The victim then started to run away from the group.

It was then that Gibbs pulled out a gun and pointed it at the victim. Gibbs tracked the victim with his handgun, and fired multiple shots at him, causing him to fall to the ground. The victim got back up, only to collapse again at the edge of the parking lot, the complaint continues.

Metro Transit police pursued Gibbs, shooting him once in the leg before arresting him.

After Gibbs was treated for his gunshot wound at the hospital, he told investigators that he fired shots at the ground in an attempt to disperse the crowd near the parking lot, and to protect his family, the complaint states. Body-worn camera however shows that Gibbs pointed the gun directly at the victim before shooting and killing him.
