A Minneapolis man has been charged with the shooting death of a woman in North Minneapolis, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office announced Thursday.
Tyrone Maddox, 40, was charged Wednesday with intentional second-degree murder for shooting and killing a female victim on February 28. Maddox also faces an unintentional second-degree murder charge while committing a felony, and, possessing ammunition or firearms charge. Maddox was prohibited from carrying a weapon due to an earlier conviction of a crime of violence.
Maddox will make his first court appearance today at 1:30 p.m.
According to the criminal complaint, on February 28 at 6:22 a.m., Minneapolis Police went to 3214 Logan Avenue North on a report of a shooting. When they arrived, officers found the female victim in the middle of the road facedown with a gunshot wound to her stomach. She was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.
A witness who saw the shooting described what happened to officers, and identified the suspect’s vehicle and the driver. Surveillance video from the area also captured the shooting.
The vehicle was a gray Chrysler 300 with black rims and pulled up in front of 3214 Logan Avenue North where the victim is seen walking towards vehicle. Maddox can be seen getting out of the front passenger side of the car, and walking with the victim behind the vehicle. Eventually, the victim is seen falling to the ground, the complaint states. Maddox then gets back into the car and he and the driver leave the area.
Officers identified the driver, who in turn informed them of what occurred. He told police about driving Maddox to the area, and that Maddox did shoot the victim, the complaint continues. The driver also stated that after Maddox shot the victim, he demanded the driver flee the scene and drop him off somewhere else in Minneapolis.
Eventually, police located Maddox in downtown Minneapolis near 9th Street South and Nicollet Mall. When they approached him, he attempted to run away, and in the process, threw a semi-automatic handgun under a car. Maddox was apprehended, and the semi-automatic handgun was later located, the complaint says.
Maddox initially denied killing the victim, but when shown the surveillance footage and statements from the driver, he admitted to the fatal shooting, and that he killed the victim with the semi-automatic gun he threw when attempting to flee police. He further stated that he was drunk at the time of the incident and did not intentionally shoot the victim.
