On April 28, Demetrius Wynne, of Brooklyn Park, was sentenced to 324 months in prison for the 2015 murder of Susan Spiller, who was 68-years-old, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Thursday. At the time of the murder, Wynne was 14-years-old, and was certified to stand trial as an adult in November 2019.
Wynne, now 21, was found guilty of intentional-second degree murder by a Hennepin County jury on March 29, 2022. At the sentencing, the State requested 367 months in prison. The presumptive sentence for this offense is 306 months according to the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines.
At the sentencing, 21 victim impact statements were submitted by community members, friends, and family, all citing how the victim positively influenced their lives. There were three impact statements that were read aloud in court. One was read by the victim’s son, and the victim’s daughter-in-law read her own statement as well as another statement on behalf of a friend.
For time already served, Wynne will receive 1,044 days of credit.
