Jamal Smith found guilty of first-degree murder in Highway 169 road rage shooting

7/21/2022

On July 21, Jamal Smith was convicted by a Hennepin County jury of murder in the first degree, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Thursday.

"I want to first send my condolences to the family for their loss," Freeman said. "Nothing we do can bring him back, but this conviction brings us one step closer in achieving justice for Jay Boughton."

"I also want to thank the prosecution team, led by Dan Allard and Erin Lutz, for their excellent work in presenting an extremely effective case to the jury. Their work in piecing this case together with law enforcement over the course of many months exemplifies the high quality of work our community deserves and has come to expect."

"Difficult cases like this one show that random violence will not be tolerated, and we will take every step to ensure justice for victims and their families."

The jury also found Smith guilty of murder in the second degree and felon in possession of a firearm.
