On March 22, Khalil Wiley was sentenced to 45-months in prison for shooting a male victim in the leg at the Mall of America on New Year’s Eve 2021, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Tuesday.
Wiley, 18, of St. Paul, pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree assault on March 11. Per his plea agreement, Wiley received an aggravated sentence of 45-months in prison since he admitted to firing gunshots in the presence of children. Wiley must also pay restitution.
He will receive 77 days of credit for time served.
In accordance with the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines, the presumptive sentence for his offense was 36-months. The aggravating factor of shooting the male victim in front of children was the reason for the additional nine-months Wiley agreed to.
At the sentencing, a victim impact statement was read by the wife of a victim whose shoulder was grazed by a bullet. She cited the trauma experienced by her family as a result of this incident.
