Newly-charged cases also involve seizure of 14 pounds of methamphetamine, nearly 2 pounds of cocaine, and multiple firearms
Six individuals have been charged separately with intent to sell significant quantities of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine, along with illegal possession of firearms, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty announced today. In all, the cases involve more than 15,600 grams of fentanyl (or around 34.5 pounds), 14 pounds of methamphetamine, nearly 2 pounds of cocaine, and at least seven firearms and additional ammunition. Around two to three milligrams, or around .002 to .003 grams, is generally considered a lethal dose of fentanyl.
“These cases are the result of incredible work by our law enforcement partners to seize these narcotics and arrest those trying to spread them throughout our communities,” Moriarty said. “We have a public health crisis in our neighborhoods because of the opioids and other dangerous substances flooding the streets. We will not rest in our efforts to bring to justice those who seek to destroy our communities with these deadly drugs.”
The cases come after significant enforcement efforts by several law enforcement agencies, including:
- Anoka-Hennepin Violent Crime Task Force
- Dakota County Sheriff’s Office
- Fridley Police Department
- Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Violent Offender Task Force
- Minneapolis Police Department
- Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension
- MSP Airport Police Department
The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office is now coordinating with the U.S. Attorney’s Office to determine the most appropriate venue for prosecution of these cases.
Drug overdoses, both fatal and nonfatal, have increased steadily in Hennepin County for several years. Fatal and nonfatal overdoses in Hennepin County have more than doubled since 2018. Opioids were involved in more than 82% of fatal Hennepin County overdoses in the most recent data available from the Minnesota Department of Health.
