Marvel Galvaston Williams sentenced to 291 months in North Loop high-speed chase and shootout

3/6/2023

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty announced today that Marvel Galvaston Williams was sentenced to 291 months in prison for his role in a high-speed chase and shootout in the North Loop neighborhood of Minneapolis on October 6, 2021. Williams was a passenger in one vehicle chasing another prior to the other vehicle losing control and hit and killed a bystander.

“Mr. Williams’ conduct was extraordinarily reckless and dangerous,” Moriarty said. “People come to Minneapolis for many reasons and have a right to be safe when they do. We will continue to aggressively prosecute those who commit violence, create fear in our community, and threaten our safety.”

According to the criminal complaint, on October 6, 2021, at approximately 11:09 p.m. on-duty Metro Transit Police Officers heard gunfire in the general area of 5th Street North and 6th Avenue North. Officers observed a black SUV traveling at a high rate of speed enter the intersection of 5th Street North and 6th Avenue North from the West. Officers then heard a loud crash.

Officers ran to the area of the crash and observed the two vehicles that had crashed. One vehicle, a silver Durango had crashed into a building. The second vehicle, a black Range Rover, had crashed into a light pole and was on fire. Mr. Williams was a passenger in the Range Rover.

Video footage showed the Range Rover chasing the Durango at a high rate of speed along Olson Memorial Highway heading into downtown and the area where a crash occurred. The victim had been on a scooter standing at a corner when the Durango lost control and crashed into her, pushing her into a building, and trapping her under the vehicle.
