Calon Hatchett sentenced to 47 ¼ years for two fatal 2023 shootings
8/28/2024
The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office today secured a 47.25-year sentence (567 months) for Calon Markus Hatchett, 21, for killing two people in two separate shootings in 2023.
Hatchett is responsible for the deaths of Ali Reed and Tonia Powell, along with the attempted murder of two additional individuals.
“My thoughts are with the victims who survived Mr. Hatchett’s crimes and with the families of Ali Reed and Tonia Powell, who did not,” said Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty. “It is a difficult fact of prosecution that no sentence can return what was lost for Mr. Hatchett’s victims or their loved ones, but the nearly 50 years on his sentence ensures he is unable to harm our community for decades.”
According to the complaints:
On June 25, 2023, Ali Reed and another person encountered a group of three males walking near 21st Street East and Chicago Avenue South. After the two groups crossed paths, one of the men in the group of three pulled out a handgun and shot Reed. Reed collapsed immediately and died at the scene. The other victim ran away while being shot at by two of the males and escaped to safety.
On July 23, 2023, police responded to a shooting at an apartment building on the 3000 block of East 58th Street in Minneapolis. Upon arrival, officers found a woman, Tonia Powell, with multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
Officers entered Powell’s apartment and found another woman with a gunshot wound. That victim was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center where she underwent surgery and survived.
The incidents were solved in reverse order when firearms evidence from both scenes matched. Hatchett was arrested on July 24, 2023, with the firearm used in the shootings.
