The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office hosted a press conference Thursday featuring Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty, Assistant County Attorney Rana Alexander, and representatives from Moms Demand Action regarding the Extreme Risk Protection Order program and process.
In partnership with Moms Demand Action, the office informed the public about resources available to them in moments of crisis and to better understand how Extreme Risk Protection Orders are useful tools to keep people safe.
“The proliferation of guns in our community is staggering, and we are committed to using every available resource to address this crisis.” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “That is why our office has taken the lead in utilizing Extreme Risk Protection Orders – or ERPOs. You may know these as red flag laws. An ERPO is an order that temporarily prohibits someone in danger of causing harm to themselves or to others from possession or purchasing guns.”
“As the House author of the Extreme Risk Protection Order legislation, I am proud that this law is already saving lives and protecting public safety,” Minnesota State Representative Cedrick Frazier said. “The data regarding ERPOs are clear, when we intervene early in dangerous situations, we are able to provide better outcomes across the board. It’s our job as leaders and legislators to enact these common-sense reforms because our constituents have given us a mandate to address the spiraling epidemic of gun violence, and this tool is a step in the right direction.”
