Hennepin County Attorney’s Office announces charges in shooting spree

9/20/2024

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office today charged Joshua Anthony Jones, 36, with one count of second-degree murder and one count of attempted second-degree murder for two shootings that occurred on Sept. 18, 2024. Mr. Jones is also under investigation for a separate homicide which occurred in the early morning hours that same day.

According to the investigation, all the shootings occurred within a 24-hour period in the Phillips neighborhood in south Minneapolis. Police first identified Mr. Jones from surveillance video showing him shooting and killing a victim at point-blank range. Further investigation connected him to the other shootings that occurred in the area.

“Although the investigation is ongoing, it appears that Mr. Jones targeted several individuals over a short time span, taking two lives and harming three other victims. His actions are horrifying, and he will be held accountable by this office,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “Although this attack does not appear to have been targeted at the broader unhoused community, we know that that is little comfort to them. Everyone deserves to feel safe, housed or not, and our office will work to ensure that they do.”

There may be additional charges after further investigation.  Mr. Jones is in custody.
