Hopkins man sentenced to 180 months after conviction for 2023 attack on corrections officer

4/22/2025

Gregory Jorge Garcia, 24, was sentenced Tuesday to 180 months after previously being found guilty at trial of the following charges stemming from an attack on a corrections officer in November 2023:

  • First-degree assault, great bodily harm against a corrections employee
  • First-degree assault, use of deadly force against a corrections employee
  • Third-degree assault, substantial bodily harm
  • Fourth-degree assault against a corrections employee

“This was a vicious, unprovoked assault on a corrections officer who was performing his duties at the Hennepin County Jail,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “The victim suffered significant injuries, including a traumatic brain injury. My thoughts are with him as he continues his recovery, and I wish him the best for the future. Mr. Garcia is being held accountable for his actions.”
