Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty appoints Morgan Kunz as Criminal Division director

4/21/2025

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty announced today the appointment of Morgan Kunz as the office’s Criminal Division director.

Kunz previously served as the Managing Attorney of the Youth Prosecution Division, which handles all level of offenses committed by youth in Hennepin County. Over the past two years in that role, he expanded the use of early interventions and restorative practices to achieve faster and more effective interventions, as well as focusing resources on repeat offenders and motor vehicle theft to better protect public safety.

“Morgan is an experienced, collaborative, and thoughtful leader,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “I’m grateful he has agreed to step into this critical role, and I look forward to working closely with him.”

Kunz joined the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office in 2014, spending four years in the Special Litigation Division where he handled complex criminal prosecutions.

“It’s a privilege to work alongside the gifted prosecutors and staff in this office as we pursue justice and safety with our community,” Kunz said. “I look forward to making an impact in this role and I am grateful for the opportunity.”

Prior to his time in Minnesota, he represented the City of New York and the New York City Police Department in federal litigation. He attended the New York Law School after completing undergraduate studies at Wheaton College in Massachusetts.
