Dameon Collins sentenced to 420 months for 2024 shooting
8/25/2025
Dameon Markese Collins, 24, was sentenced Monday to 420 months for the fatal shooting of Carl Woodard, 55, on June 28, 2024.
Mr. Collins pleaded guilty to second-degree intentional murder in June and admitted to firing 23 shots at Mr. Woodard in the presence of other people on the street who could have been struck. His 420-month sentence is an aggravated durational departure from the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines.
“Carl should still be with his family, but Mr. Collins’ extreme act of violence took that away,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “My thoughts are with Carl’s loved ones and while nothing prosecutors can do will fill the void in his family’s hearts, this is an appropriate prison sentence to protect the community from Mr. Collins.”
Mr. Collins has 405 days of credit for time already served.

Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines
The Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines system promotes uniform and proportional sentences for convicted felons and helps to ensure that sentencing decisions are not influenced by factors such as race, gender, or the exercise of constitutional rights by the defendant.
The Guidelines serve as a model for the criminal justice system as a whole to aspire to, as well as provide a standard to measure how well the system is working.
