Minneapolis man pleads guilty for 2023 fatal shooting
2/24/2025
Kayvon Julian-Breaun Madison, 23, entered a straight plea to one count of second-degree intentional murder for the fatal shooting of Darien Roberson in Edina in 2023.
A trial was held to determine if an aggravating factor existed at the time of the murder which, if it is found to have existed, would result in a longer sentence. That matter has been taken under advisement by the court, which will issue an order on its decision.
“My thoughts are with Darien’s family,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “Mr. Roberson attempted to end the interaction between himself and Mr. Madison multiple times. He should have made it home safely. He should still be alive. Mr. Madison will be held accountable, and a lengthy sentence is necessary to protect the community.”
A contested sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 23, 2025.
Case Number: 27-CR-23-26000
Note A previous release incorrectly stated that under the terms of the agreement, Mr. Madison will serve a 306-month prison sentence. There is no plea agreement in place between the State and Mr. Madison. The sentence will be decided in the contested sentencing hearing scheduled for April 23.
